What breed of dog do you think is the least likely to get adopted from a shelter?

Aside from APBT's because I know where I live that rescues have to take them anyways.
I heard somewhere that it was proven that big black dogs were the least likely to get adopted. My fiance is adopting a rottie very soon and I might get another another siberian husky or some kind of hound. I just wondered what breed of dog you think is the least likely to get adopted.

  1. True, black dogs are least likely to get adopted, Also shelters are literally swamped with chihua huas.

  2. Other than bully breeds, you’re right it’s big black dogs. But I don’t know why!

  3. A chow because their coats look like a lot of work. A beagle because they are often loud at shelters and pounds.

  4. For me its ALL of them.

I only want my dogs from a reputable breeder.
I like to know where my dog came from, the health of the parents, and the temperaments of the parents.

One has to remember that it is VERY rare for a dog from a reputable breeder to wind up at a pound or rescue since reputable breeders will ALWAYS take back one of their dogs.

  5. IMO, anything either big or bully breed will have the hardest time finding a home. Most shelters are absolutely inundated with APBTs, AmStaffs, and all sorts of crosses of those two. Irresponsible owners and yellow journalism are the main issue here.

  6. lab mixes. Especially labs with wide or incorrect ears like this guy: http://www.dogfriendly.com/server/general/gallery/images/mazzy.jpg

these poor guys are often lumped with “pit mixes” just because they have weird ears.

  7. American Pit Bull Terriers are the #1 dog killed in shelters, no other breed can come close expect for black lab mixes.

As for #2 It would have to be labradors and their mixes.

  8. pit bull mixes who r old, maybe with sickness or disease i wuv helping all doggies in shelters thats why i adopted one and volunteer! i found 2 black dogs a home, 4 cats, 1 big white dog and 2 small puppies!

  9. APBTs of course, but then it usually is big black dogs, ones that look like rotts, dobermans and any bully breed are the least likely to get adopted. And most of that has to do with the overwhelming numbers of them available. My local shelter will have one or two small dogs, a few golden or lab mixes, and the rest are bully breeds and big black shorthaired dogs.

  10. Yeah your right. I think it’s because they are so “common” and unfortunately due to their coat color, they don’t stand out, their features are kinda hidden and so when people walk by potential dogs, a black dog just doesn’t stand out and attract their attention. However, I think black dogs are beautiful and I have a black Labrador that I adopted and who I love to death! As for pitbulls, and other bully breeds, they too tend to get overlooked due to their “bad reputation”.

  11. In the shelter I used to work at there were a lot of Greyhounds that had retired from their racing career. Also, a lot of staffy’s and labradors. There were very rarely small dogs there, I’m not sure if that’s common or not.
I’m in the UK, so there were never any APBT’s.

  12. Not sure. I’ve noticed that here in the UK, all the shelters I’ve looked at have many, many Staffordshire Bull Terriers. There also seem to be a lot of Huskies and GSDs being abandoned and rehomed.

I think older dogs seem to have the lowest chance of finding nice new homes, which is really sad.
