Philosophically, how do I control a thought without the conflict of effort?
I have to make an effort to problem solve, but other than that, my thoughts are just reactions. If I wanted to stop reacting because I see that it causes conflict, how do I control my thoughts without any effort, because effort causes more conflict?

Meditation. The goal of meditation is to block thoughts entirely, without effort of course. The thoughtless conscious state of mind is known as Nirvana.
That would be the only way, and it takes a lot of practice. You’re inhibotory neurons aren’t exercised often enough otherwise.
There is no other way. Clearly you can’t stop thinking through conscious effort, that would be paradox.
Just read about Buddhism for a better explanation.

Effortlessness is a key. To get there is a key hole.

first i have a question for you- how does effort cause conflict?
in my experience, you need to use some effort into changing your reactions. i once did this, it took about a few weeks and i considerate it one of the most significant changes ive made in my life. and it has made my life a whole lot more enjoyable. what’s more in putting in the effort in changing this nothing much bad really happend

I think that your observation is accurate. I suggest you try, once the
thought occurs to you, to leave it to swim its own course through your
mind and accept the result. You don’t have to control a thought. You
can encounter it and then leave it be.

Observation is the effort. If one is not “Master” of mind then one is slave to it. We must do the work of observing every thought and it’s re-actions.This leads to the effortless effort….Peace and Blessings…

Disconnection.
All change takes effort, but time drags on, either with self-effort or not.
