Is it unhealthy to strain water from rice once cooked?

My family has always cooked rice with exactly double water, so when it's cooked there's usually no left over water. But I recently I stayed at an host family's place for 4 months, where they would always cook rice in lots of water (about 3 times as the grain) and strain it in the end.

I thought it was unhealthy because it drains the nutrients, but they're a family of doctors (4 out of their 6 members are doctors!) and they advised it's healthier because you release the starch once strained - so you eat the grain itself, and not the unneeded starch.
