I just moved to a different state. Should I re-microchip my dog for a second time?

  1. No. You contact the company that registered the first chip and change your contact information.

  2. No. You contact the company the microchip is registered with, and they will change your contact information that is associated with the chip. You do NOT have a second chip inserted, as the scanner could pick up the “old” chip that’s associated with the incorrect contact information if the dog were to be lost.

  3. No! Please don’t re-microchip your dog. This has been known to cause cancer among dogs at the site of the injected microchip. Just call the company that manufactures your dog’s chip and change the address. Many companies charge for the service, but it is a smaller cost than re-microchipping your dog.

  4. No, you just change the contact information on the chip. Call the Microchip company.

  5. Ditto on oregano 13. That’s what i say too.

  6. No. All the major microchip companies allow for changes in information. The only time you would need to do a different microchip was if you were moving overseas (some countries need a specific type of chip to be implanted, and not all veterinary practices use that kind of chip for regular chipping).

Also, I have never seen cancer in an animal that has been rechipped. The chip itself is well-tolerated (although it may migrate in the body), and the implantation isn’t surgical. Literally, we use a sterile syringe with the chip already inside and inject it under the skin. Nothing special about it.

  7. no just contact the microchip company to update your information

  8. You just update your information with the company who has the chip’s number.
