How long has horse slaughter been going on?
Need this information for a research paper. I just need an answer to the question, no rants on how inhumane slaughter is, or why we need to keep it. I already have my opinion on it.
Thanks!
[sorry for the briefness]
Preferably when it started in the United States, but I can take any where as an answer.
10 points will be given to the first GOOD answer!

I believe the native americans where the first to slaughter horses but only in times of dire need =like no other meat source was found.
Also from what I understand most horse meat for human consumption is sent to places like france we here use it for dog food.I think it is horrible but I love horses.

as long as i can remember in my 50 yrs.
when i was a small girl i remember a big truck hauling away horses for slaughter but sometimes they were sold instead of slaughter
i remember in school they would say don’t eat the glue or paste, it’s made from horses..so i have no clue where that came from
i’m a hairdresser and the hoofs are used to make a filler to help condition the hair before color or dye

Time immemorial.
You can go back and read ancient Greek writings such as the Odyssey or the Iliad or the History of Herodotus and the sacrifice of horses to the gods is mentioned.
As far as America, horse slaugher probably first started just after the Conquistators arrived being as how they brought horses to North America with them.

horses have been slaughtered always, either as food or as ‘vermin’ control.

Horses have been slaughtered for meat from the time the earliest man realized he could eat them. Slaughter for old, injured, or unwanted horses has been available ever since people started using horses for riding/work.
The first European colonies in what is now the US exercised this option. Soldiers/cavalry have resorted to killing and eating horses since time began, and even Native Americans would ‘cull’ substandard, old, or sick animals.

horses have been used for meat and goods since before recorded history, humans were hunting them before the land bridge between north america and eastern europe and is a possible reason for the migration of humans and animals across it.there are cave drawings in france of humans hunting horses for food and in eastern europe several tribes still raise horses for their meat.as for in the united states,as another poster said the reintroduction of the horse to north america brought with it the use of horses as meat and goods.horses have fed armies, and have also fed those when no other meat or vegetables were available.

Since the dawn of time, Katie- or certainly, since the dawn of recorded history. The very first relationship ANY human being ever had with ANY horse was a predator/prey relationship- horses were food to us for many thousands of years. Horses were not domesticated for eons- and when people finally started riding them and using them as transport, that didn’t mean that the original relationship ended, because it didn’t. People continued to hunt and kill horses for food, and in many countries, horsemeat is considered a delicacy, in fact. The US is probably the only country on the face of the Earth which actually has a cultural taboo against the consumption of horse meat for food- nobody else has that.
As for slaughter in the US, it’s been going on in one form or another since before this country was founded, Katie. It’s just been within the last year or so that it was finally outlawed, much to the regret of everyone in the industry. If you read your US history, you will find accounts of horses being slaughtered for meat and for their hides, going all the way back to before the Revolutionary War. Horses were definitely slaughtered during the Civil War, and during both World Wars- during the first one, it was impossible for us to raise enough beef to keep our troops fed, so horses became an alternative food source. During the campaign to win and open the western US, horses were also slaughtered- by both our own army, AND by the Native American tribes they were fighting.
I hope this helps you with your project.

I think the cavemen used to hunt them so basically it has been going on forever.
As to when it was first practiced in America – I would expect that the Native Americans were not averse to horsemeat and the same would apply to Aztecs, Incas etc.

Horse slaughter has been going on sense humans discovered horses.
How long has horse slaughter been going on in the US? Completely stopped over 3 years ago when they shut down the last two tallow/hoof slaughter houses in the US.
So in short equine slaughter does not exist in the United States anymore. They moved to Mexico and Canada.
