How long does an electric hot water last?

We have a Whirlpool electric hot water heater, 40 gallons, dated 1999 and we are finding after running out of hot water it can take a couple of hours for the water to heat up again. Is it because of its age or something else?
Also if it is filled with sediment would that affect water pressure?

  1. water heaters tend to last 5 to 10 yrs…longer w/soft water. it may be worn out, it may be plugged w/sediment – try this – TURN OFF water heater, turn off water let it cool down VERY IMPORTANT,then attach a hose to the spigot on bottom, and drain completely. if there’s too much sediment, may have to clean out the spigot w/coat hanger you may get wet…when they get too much sediment, that leaves less room for water, and seems worn out!! good luck

  2. You probably have an element that is out.
    Your water heater has two.
A handy man can repair if knowledgeable. $20.00 for the element or thermostat and what ever for labor.
Professional around $100.00 for all or replace for around 4 times as much.

  3. water heaters have whats called an anode rod in them to help with rusting and particles in the water. aluminum ones normally last about 6/7 years and magnesium 10 years. it should say on the energy label how many years it is warrantied for. but as long as you flush it out it might just be an element or thermostat that needs to be replaced. hope that this helps alittle :)

  4. unless the tank itself leaks you should not have to replace a water heater. if its that old and you do not have the training you need to diagnose the problem, i would just replace all the parts. they are all easy to do and fairly cheap. two new elements are about $5-7 each. an upper stat is about 9 and a lower is about 5. while you have it empty to do this, pour some lime away in and flush that out when your done.this will remove the sediment. may as well replace the rod and the dip tube if they need it then also. make sure you fill it back up before you restore power or the new elements will burn right back out.
