  1. It’s not a period (there is no blood, only clear fluid at most). Dogs and primates get periods, but cats go into ‘season’. She’s got her first heat in season.

Ours would be in heat for 2 weeks, be off for 4 days then go back into heat for 2 weeks, and would cycle for 3 months. We finally scraped the money together to get her spayed.

(added) cats don’t bleed red unless they’ve got a medical condition–you really need to contact your vet and describe this. Felines never have blood periods. Your cat is bleeding for some reason internally and this needs to be addressed fast.

When I said dog’s get ‘periods’ I meant they do ‘bleed’, it’s still called ‘in heat’ for them, but there is blood, unlike all other mammal species that come into heat. Ok, so the other person was correct on terminology, however red blood is ok for dogs. NOT with cats.

  2. Cats don’t have periods. Female humans do and some higher primates. Dogs do NOT get periods. A period signifies when a female is NOT pregnant.

They have a heat, also known as a season or estrus. This signifies whent the cat (yours is still a kitten) can become pregnant. It is the same with dogs.

    See the difference?

Cats are prolific breeders. They don’t ovulate until after mating. Her season will last about 2 weeks and then come back after approximately 2 weeks. This will go on throughout spring and summer.

Have your cat spayed. There are enough homeless, shelter, and feral cats as it is, plus she’s too young to be a good mother or have a healthy pregnancy.

  3. Hopefully, this is not really blood, and is just “tinged” liquid. Heat “cycles” usually last around 10 – 14 days. Then, there’s a period of about 2 weeks before they ( heats ) cycle in again. Today is her first day……soon she’ll be rolling on the floor w/butt in air, moaning, yowling, etc……and drive everyone crazy!!

This will go on forever, until 1 of 2 things happen. She gets pregnant ( not a good idea, particularly at HER age ), or she’s spayed ( BEST idea….as soon as this heat is over ). Do not let her get anywhere NEAR a male cat…….even if it’s as young as she is…..or she’ll get pregnant and you’ll have an “iffy” delivery……she’s too young to SAFELY carry & deliver a HEALTHY litter!!

Cats are not like people. They don’t “make love”! Their matings are strictly instinctual….like climbing, jumping, scratching, purring, etc……If they don’t have kittens, they don’t know the difference! And…….FYI…….the ovulation of an egg takes place AT THE MOMENT of the male cat’s penis REMOVAL. That’s why you hear the female SCREAM at the end of their mating “session”..

So, keep her contained until this heat is over, then get her spayed ASAP. Call your vet, and you might be able to have this done WHILE she’s in heat. Otherwise, you’ll have a cat who goes through this over & over & over……………etc.

    Hope this helps……..good luck.

  4. Be a responsible pet owner get your cat spayed. There are enough cats and kittens in shelters waiting for homes. Do not contribute to the already over-populated pet population.
These are the reasons so many cats and kittens are put down every day. People don’t fix their pets and they end up getting pregnant. Leave the breeding to the reputable breeders.
