Does desexing a dog make it harder to train in schutzhund?

i have a male Doberman Pinscher puppy (9 weeks old) who i am hoping to compete in schutzhund with. I am just wondering if i have him desexed, (as i have no intention of breeding or showing him) will that make it harder for him to be trained in bite/protection work?

  1. He might be less aggressive.

  2. No. All neutering truly does is stop the chances of reproduction. Everything else comes with training, age, temperament, personality, genes, etc. If he’s an appropriate candidate for schutzhund, then with training, he’ll do just fine whether he’s neutered or not.

  3. Opinions vary on how altering a dog affects its drive. However I would not recommend neutering him until he is fully mature. Neutering before the growth plates are closed will result in a taller lankier dog and neutering before full maturity will result in less muscle mass.

  4. He may just be less dominant and aggressive.

  5. No!! Neutering you dog will only stop him from reproducing. Spaying and Neutering your pets has tons of benefit’s. No it won’t affect his training, he’ll be easier to train because he’s less interested in females. He will also be less aggressive, and pets that are spayed and neutered live longer and healthier lives.

  6. No. Your dog may be a little stubborn for the next week or so, because he’ll be just a little traumatized by the operation, but after, he’ll be totally normal, and even BETTER. He’ll become less agressive, more attentionate, and will have more attention towards you than towards the “ladies”. He wouldn’t bite as much, and he’ll have more time for the family.

    Hope I helped,
    Sandra.

  7. I don’t know why you would want to train him this way but any dog whether deesexed or not can be made mean. Then you put up with the dog biting someone and then being taken away and euthanized for being mean..with no way of rehabilitating him

  8. For those not aware what schutzhund is – it is not about aggression but about proper training to defend and detain not attacking without provication – If I were you I would consult some of the trainers in schutzhund to see what they have done with their male dogs – desexing because you have no intention of breeding is a very good idea if the pup is a female but if you want to compete then it may be best to keep your boy intact- if you have him trained in schutzhund you will be able to control him – hope you have a long and wonderful future with your dog and he excells in schutzhund it is a wonderful way to bond with your dog while allowing him to explore his full potential and will also prevent bordom and will also socialize him – best wishes

  9. It shouldn’t. The dog would be concentrating more on commands then if a female in heat was nearby.

  10. Neutering him young will definitely affect his drives. Let him mature…then neuter at 18-24 months. Schutzhund does not require aggression…however, the prey drive must be very high for the bitework. Depending on HOW you plan on training the tracking and obedience can be highly affected by decreased drives as well.

Anybody relating Schutzhund to creating mean, aggressive or dangerous dogs is obviously smoking something better than anything I’ve ever tried. Don’t concern yourself with the “Clueless”.
