  1. Yes you can.

You can either make your computer a “duel boot” system, which is very complicated, and even though I did that once, I don’t EVER want to do that again!

Or, you can use VMWare to have both OS running at the same time.

I’ve never used VMWare, but I understand it’s very good at what it does. Also I’ve been told that if I ever DO want to use it, it’s a free download.

    Good luck.

  2. As you seem to be a total newbie when it comes to *nix I would suggest getting VMWare or VirtualPC.

That will create a virtual PC you can use to install all sorts of things. The virtual PC will be completely separated from your current install. Hence you don’t run the risk of destroying your working system.

Added bonus you don’t have to reboot and you can run several virtual PCs simultaneously.

  3. You can virtualize it inside Windows:

Or you can set up a dual-boot with partitioning:

  4. A dual boot is a lot easier than previosly mentioned. You want to have XP loaded first and then install linux. I installed the Ubuntu version and it does everything automatically. When your computer boots up it will default to Ubuntu unless you select Windows. Loading windows over Ubuntu is what will cause problems.

Once you get your linux OS operating properly you probably won’t want to use Windows because linux is more stable, faster and doesn’t typically have a virus problem.
