Can I buy my guinea pig now then purchase another one in about a month?

I plan on seeing how much money my first guinea pig will be, and if I think I can handle another one, purchase another one in about a month.
I know that your so post to buy the guineas pigs from the same litter..
But, I would rather just start off with one guinea pig at first and see how that goes before I bring another guinea pig in the picture.
I also plan on getting two boy guinea pigs.. Is that ok?
Thank you!

  1. Well, it is really better to just make sure you are ready for guinea pigs, and then get 2 at the same time. It makes things much easier. If you aren’t sure, maybe visit a friend that has one, or visit a responsible guinea pig breeder to get an idea of what is it like. They are a bit of work, so make sure you are ready. 2 boys is fine.

  2. I agree that it would be best to wait until you are ready for both of them. Having two will be almost no different than owning one. Females are usually fine with introductions, but males can be aggressive if they are not neutered. If the males are not the same age, and not from the same litter..living together don’t always go over well. If they are young enough, it may work. I suggest doing lots of research on properly introducing them if you plan to do it this way.

Personally, I would just make sure you have more than enough money first, and then buy them both from the start. If you make a list of everything you will need to start, as well as monthly costs for pellets, hay, and bedding, you can get a pretty good idea of how much money you’ll need. :)

  3. There is a lot of good logic in your thinking and just a bit of loss of fact. Actually there is no problem with getting a female guinea pig now and if you still feel you want to and can afford to getting a second one latter. You will however, want to make sure the second one you chose has a calm personality and will slip into the submissive roll and allow the first one to be the dominant guinea pig. I have only had one female guinea pig in 32 years that will not allow another female in her cage. She is a very calm girl, she just simply loves to live alone and does not like sharing her cage. She will not allow another guinea pig to eat properly and will barber them!! This, however, is quite unusual for female guinea pigs as they usually get along very easily.

Male guinea pigs are a different story though, just the make up of the beast!! Males do quite often fight, even if they get along as youngsters, once they mature they both want to be the boss of the cage and neither will give so often people find they have two guinea pigs in separate cages.

With a single guinea pig they do quite well if you give them at least 2 hours a day of one on one attention.I know right off the top of your head you think that is a bit difficult, however, I can show you how very easy it actually is. Go to my You Tube site and view The Towel trick.

Wrap your guinea pig in a towel and lie it on your chest (the sound of your heart is comforting to it) while you watch TV, read a book or listen to music, guinea pigs love music.Set it in your lap while you are on the computer, my Miya loves the sound of the keyboard and purrs to it. Carry it about the house while you do your day, guinea pigs adore doing your day with you. Talk to it softly and pet the towel thus you are petting the guinea pig through the towel. In the begging your guinea pig may face into the towel and put its bum out, but as it gets comfortable it will stay with its face out. This is mimicking their need to burrow in the tall grasses in the wild when afraid or tired so it tends to be a very successful way to bond to your guinea pig and to spend time with it simply by inviting it into your daily routines.
