About how much does it cost to keep an animal in a shelter for a day?

I just want a close estimate of how much it would cost to keep a dog in a shelter for 1 day.

  1. Do you mean a boarding facility? A shelter is where homeless pets go. If you drop one off there, you aren’t getting it back.

A boarding kennel can run anywhere from $15/day to $75/day depending upon where you are in the world.

  2. Shelters do not take dogs and board them. Dog boarding kennels do. And you will have to call around your area to find that out.
Shelters are where you take a dog to get rid of it when you no longer want it.

  3. why would you do it?

  4. Shelters aren’t in the business of boarding animals.

  5. I believe you would need an estimate of the cost of utilities, cost of employees there for per hour (and multiply by the amount of time they’re there, which is usually like 9 hours. None that I know of have workers over night.) Then you would divide it by the amount of animals currently in their care. A lot of times the shelters grossly over estimate the cost of a dog in their care since most shelters that I know of have donated food and then said it costs them $200 a week. So, I would think in reality a total guess on my part would probably be like $50-$75 a week. Many shelters that I know have a couple hundred or more animals at a time.

If you’re referring to boarding places, check around. I’ve seen them anywhere from $15 to stay in a small kennel to $100 a night for businesses with large comfortable dog runs.

  6. I hope you mean boarding facility. Around here, it costs about $50.
